Moon Sun
words & music by Shimshai
Good morning Grandmother, I hope you are well
There's life to be lived and there's stories to tell
And I'll carry you with me through all of my days
& know that a piece of your heart will remain
And I pray for you Mother who gave me my birth
For all you have loved and for all it is worth
We are in this together, we're one and the same
So I thank you for all of your joy and your pain
And I love, love like the moon & the sun
They hold us together and so become one
And I love, love as the star to the sky
With a twinkle to hold back the tear in my eye
A new day for you Sister, a child of the world
We'll always remember that sweet little girl
Who is wandering, searching, and what has she found?
Well I pray for you safely to come back around
And I love, love like the moon & the sun
They hold us together and so become one
And I love, love as the sea to the land
With a grain of your life in the palm of my hand
For the gift of a lover, the Queen of my Heart
From one to another in learning our part
This love is forever and time is for now
& I know that we'll always remember somehow
For my light and my Daughter, you know me so well
There's more to this life than we ever may tell
As we seek for a purpose, we're put to the test
We trust in the Mystery to care for the rest
And I love, love like the moon & the sun
They hold us together and so become one
And I love, love as the star to the sky
With a twinkle to hold back the tear in my eye
And I love, love like the moon & the sun
They hold us together and so become one
And I love, love as the sea to the land
With a grain of your life in the palm of my hand
I seem to recall I had bits of this melody in my head for a while, but the song itself really took shape as my last remaining Grandmother (paternal) was getting close to the end of her time. I went and visited her in Seattle for what would be the last time and as soon as I returned home the song crystallized pretty effortlessly. Originally a tribute to Grandma it sort of grew naturally into an extended prayer of love for the women closest in my life; Grandmother, Mother, Sister, Wife, Daughter. As soon as I had a version of the song ready I sent it to the family and Grandma, never being a huge music lover, had that song playing over and over in her final days! She passed peacefully surrounded by her children on her 91st birthday, April 12, 2022. A pretty sweet memory to carry on that lives now through this song.
Another interesting tie-in here is back in the fires of 2020, one of the special guitars I lost was a 100 yr old Gibson that had belonged to my other Grandmother (maternal). I replaced the original antique guitar with a similar, but new vintage reissue Gibson model and that is the guitar that is played on this song, so we have a double homage to each Grandmother!
